How to Make a Simple Crochet Butterfly

Terminology Used

In this pattern you will use:

  • MR – magic ring
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • ch – chain
  • DC – double crochet
  • TR – treble crochet

Materials

For my simple crochet butterflies, I used:

  • 5mm crochet hook
  • Loops & Threads brand Impeccable Acrylic yarn in shade “Red Hot”
  • scissors

For this pattern you can use any size hook as well as any yarn you would like, just be aware that the size will change depending on your yarn weight and hook size.

This pattern makes one butterfly about 1 inch tall and 1.5 inches wide.

Starting the Butterfly

To begin, make a MR – leave a longer tail on your ring. We will need it later.

The Wings

Top left wing: Ch 3, TR 1, Ch 3, sl st into MR.

Bottom two wings: (Ch 2, DC 1, Ch 2, sl st) x 2 into MR

Final top right wing: Ch 3, TR 1, Ch 3, close MR and tie off leaving a longer tail to make the body.

The Body

Take the MR tail and the tail you made from tying off and wrap them in opposite directions around the middle of the butterfly until both ends are pointing up.

Tie these two ends together and pull the two ends so that they resemble antennae.

Optionally, you can tie little knots in the end of each antennae or just trim them to your desired length.

Tada! Theres a small butterfly that has endless uses. I have uses these to add elements to vines and flowers or you could add a loop of yarn through the body and you’ve made a keychain. The opportunities are endless so make sure you let me know how your butterflies turned out!
