And a new crochet term for your dictionary:
- sl st – slip stitch
How to Slip Stitch
Our lesson today is very simple, and if you have already read through So You Want to Start Crocheting – START HERE! you will have to issue with the slip stitch.
Alright so to begin, we are going to chain 15.

Once we have our chain, in the second chain from the hook, go ahead and insert your hook. All your going to do is YO and pull up a loop. Now you have 2 loops on your hook. Grab the first loop with the hook and pull it through the second loop on the hook.

And there you have it – the slip stitch. You can see it is basically just a flat stitch with virtually no height so it is great for joining pieces together or creating beautiful patterns and textures.
Go ahead and continue your slip stitches down your chain just for some practice – and with that you have learned all of the basic stitches in crochet! Congrats! You did it and you are one step closer to making beautiful handcrafted items for yourself!
