Hello crocheters and welcome back! These are the final two stitches we will cover in our crochet for beginners guide. I hope you guys have enjoyed these lessons and they’ve helped you gain confidence in your crocheting skills.
So without further ado, the final two basic crochet stitches: double and treble crochet.

Materials
To learn these two stitches, all you will need is:
- 5mm crochet hook
- weight 4 yarn
- scissors
How to Double Crochet
So just liked when we went over how to single crochet and half double crochet, with each of those stitches we added more height with each one. The same thing will happen with our double crochet. First let’s learn the new lingo we will need:
- DC – double crochet stitch
As you can probably assume, a double crochet stitch will be the same height as 2 single crochets stacked on top of each other.
So to begin, like the last lessons we will start with a slip knot and ch 16.

This time, instead of inserting your hook in the second chain from the hook, we will be inserting it in the third chain from the hook. Since the double crochet will be basically double the height of a single crochet, we need to account for that height in the “wiggle room” we need for turning our work.
Then, just like half double crochet, YO and insert your hook through the chain. YO and pull up a loop. You now have 3 loops on your hook. YO and pull through the first two loops on the hook.

You will still have two loops on your hook so go ahead and YO again and pull through the last 2 loops on your hook. There you have it! You completed a double crochet stitch!

Now go ahead and make a square in the same way we did with the previous ones, completing a row, chaining, turning and working the next row except this time your turning chain is going to have two chains.
So you will follow (ch2, turn, DC 14) until you have 7 rows and a complete square. You can frog this work to use the yarn for the next part or you can tie off and start fresh for the treble crochets.

How to Treble Crochet
Alright one more to go and the treble crochet is basically a double crochet with one extra YO. Here’s how you will see treble crochet appear most often:
- TR – treble (sometimes also referred to as triple) crochet stitch
So if the double crochet is the same height as 2 single crochet stacked on top of each other, a treble crochet would be the height of 3 single crochets stacked on top of each other.
To make a treble crochet, we first need a foundation chain so go ahead and chain 17.

Now that you have your foundation chain, we are going to insert our hook into the 4th chain from the hook since the treble crochet will be taller we need 3 chains in our turning wiggle room. Before we insert into the chain tho, like the half double and double crochet, you are going to YO before you insert your hook. The difference in the treble crochet is you YO twice before inserting into the chain.

Then just like a double crochet, YO and pull up a loop. You will have 4 loops on your hook now. YO and pull through the first 2 loops on your hook. Now you have 3 loops. YO and pull through 2 again and once more until you’re left with one loop on your hook.

And thats’s a treble crochet! Now continue in rows, (ch 3, turn, 14 TR) until you have 5 rows and your work is a square.

You can frog your work here or tie off and keep it to look back on your progress.
Congratulations! I am so proud of you for making it through these basic stitches. Now we have just a few more lessons on some other common things you’ll see in patterns and other necessary beginners tips and tricks. Make sure you check out this post for a comparison of stitch heights.
Keep practicing and I will be back soon with the next tutorial!
